Tetracycline for Acne

Tetracycline for acne is one of the oral antibiotics groups used for the treatment of acne and other skin diseases. This group consists of  tetracycline, minocycline and doxycycline. Generally the groups have both antibiotic and anti-inflammatory effect.

The tetracyclines includes:

  • Tetracycline
  •  Doxycycline
  •  Minocycline

Of the three tetracyclines, minocycline and doxycycline are most frequently used in most parts of the world.  Acne causing bacteria are easily susceptible to minocycline and doxycycline compared with tetracycline. Besides, they have also superior efficacy in the control of mild to moderate acne.   

Common side-effects:

  • Sensitivity to sun
  • Stomach ache, nausea, diarrhoea. 
  • Head ache
  • increase vulnerability to yeast infections in woman
  • It should not be given to children under the age of nine as it impede with the development of the teeth.
  • Should not be taken by pregnant woman as it has an impact on the fetus.

Tetracycline for acne 

Tetracycline is one of the oldest antibiotic used for the treatments of moderate to severe acne. It is sold under the trade name Sumycin and Actisite. The low cost and low incidence of side effects made tetracycline the preferred acne treatment methods.

It is advisable to consult your dermatologist before taking tetracycline and other antibiotics since they have some side effects. Until a significant result is observed, the usual starting doses is 500mg twice a day. The dose can be reduced to 250mg per day and finally can be stopped.

Tips:

  • Swallow tetracycline on an empty stomach unless it upset your stomach- it is effective way
  • Take tetracycline for acne regularly as it works best when there is a steady amount in your blood stream
  • Do not take it as you lie-down on bed since the medicine can cause stomach irritation.
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid nausea and irritation of stomach.
  • Take as per prescribed even if you see a good results.

Doxycycline

Doxycycline is one of the groups of tetracycline used to treat acne. It is usually prescribed to mild to moderate to severe acne that will not respond to other treatment options. Like other antibiotics, it works by interfering the growth of bacteria that causes acne. It helps to clean body and back acne.

Mostly, doxycycline is prescribed to patients who do not respond to or cannot stand tetracycline or erythromycin. Contact your dermatologist before using doxycycline. The dosage can be started as low as 50mg - 100mg two times a day.

Tips

  • You should take doxycycline with food; if not it can cause nausea.
  • Wear sun screen
  • Take your medication exactly as directed by a physician
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid nausea and irritation of stomach.

Minocycline

Minocycline is one of the antibiotics in tetracyclines group used to treat moderate to severe acne. Like the two tetracyclies group, minocycline improve acne by killing the bacteria that causes acne as well as by reducing inflammation. For a better result, minocycline is taken once a day for 3 months.

Tips

  • As long as you are taking this medicine, use sun screen every day.
  • Do not go for tanning your skin.
  • Do not chew the medicine as it dissolve slowly and provide a steady dose over time.
  • Do not use together with other tablets such as penicillin.
  • Take your medication exactly as directed by a physician
  • Drink plenty of water to avoid nausea and irritation of stomach.
