Sulfur and resorcinol

How they work together?

Sulfur and resorcinol are mostly found together in acne products. Even though how exactly sulfur works is not known, it helps drying and peeling the surface of skin. It is also used to minimise inflammation and reduce future breakout.  Resorcinol helps prevent whiteheads, blackheads and pimples by removing dead skin cells. When the two work together, it generally reduces excess oil.

Sulfur have been used for a long period of time to treat acne. It is combined with a number of over-the-counter acne medications. It is also effective in the treatment of inflammatory acne lesions. Treatments containing sulfur have unpleasant odour and can also cause skin discoloration, as a result, it is less often used in patients with acne.


Do not expect an overnight result.


To see a better result choose acne products that contains those two ingredients. They are effective against mild to moderate acne.  This treatments are available in the forms of paste, ointment, lotion, liquid and cream. Most of the time it is available without prescription.

Resorcinol and sulfur combination is used to treat acne and other skin conditions. Once you start this combination, do not expect an overnight result. It may take up to two months to see a significant change in skin clarity. It is available in pharmacies without a prescription.

Although there are other brand names available, some of the common generic and brand name includes:

  • Rezamid
  • Sulforcin Acnomel
  • Clearasil StayClear.

How should sulfur and resorcinol be used?

  • Use only as directed by physicians.
  • Stick to the recommended dose
  • Clean the affected areas gently and dry them before using them.
  • Always clean your hands after using the treatment.
  • Your eyes is sensitive to those ingredients so Keep it away.
  • If your eyes are in contact with those chemicals accidentally, wash out them immediately with water.

Precautions

  • Before using sulfur and resorcinol make sure you are not allergic to it. Read the instruction on the label carefully.
  • Do not use on large areas of children or infants body since it results in a disease called methemoglobinemia when it is absorbed
  • Do not use cleansers or abrasive soaps, medicated cosmetics and other topical medicine for skin when you apply treatments containing those ingredients.
  • Individuals with kidney problem should avoid sulfur products.

Side effects

  • It may cause allergic reaction
  • It may result in excessive sweating
  • It may result chronic skin inflammation and irritation.
  • In some cases it may cause less severe forms of abnormal peeling of skin
