Benzoyl peroxide (BPO)


Do you know Benzoyl peroxide used for acne treatment?

Benzoyl peroxide (BPO) is one of the most important organic compound in terms of applications and the scale of its production. In addition to what we used as acne treatment, it can also used for  improving dental whitening, removal of hair color and many other uses.

Function of benzoyl peroxide

BPO has various functions when we used for acne treatment.

  • It acts as a peeling agent
  • Reduce the number of bacterial growth on the surface of skin
  • It acts as antimicrobial agent
  • Clearing skin pores

When  BPO is used for acne treatment, it is usually applied to the affected area in the forms of gel and cream. The concentration of this ingredient varied from 2.5% to 10% on the bases of product type. However; findings suggested that 5% and 10% concentration is more effective in treating pimples.

Side effects

The side effect of this ingredient is its ability to causing initial dryness and irritation at the beginning of  the treatment, even with smaller concentration. But, through time the skin develops tolerance, and the concentration can be increased to achieve a better clearance of acne.

How should benzoyl peroxide be used

  • Start with once daily to see how your skin reacts to this medication.
  • Stick to your prescription label and the instructions on the package carefully.
  • If you do not understand the direction, ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain
  • Use exactly as directed.
  • The cleansing solutions are used to clean the affected area as directed.
  • Wash the affected skin area and dry with clean towel before applying the treatment.
  • Use only for adults above 12 years old age
  • If you don't see any improvement within a month or two, contact your doctor

Precautions

  • Since BPO application is only restricted on the surface of skin, do not use around nose, lips, eyes and some sensitive area of the skin such as neck. If it gets in those parts, wash with water. 
  • Before applying any topical acne medication, try it in smaller amount to a couple of infected area for about 3 days to see whether it has some discomfort or not.
  • Even after acne breakouts clears, you'll most likely need to apply your medicine for certain period. Those bacteria could come back if you quit using this treatment. Therefore, consider  benzoyl-peroxide as a long term treatment when you plan to use to clear up your acne.
  • For numerous folks BPO is a terrific therapy for acne breakouts. If you have acne breakouts that's either zits, pustules, or also blackheads, BPO is an excellent procedure for you.
