Acne is one of those skin snags that could really take a toll on a person especially if it happened to be a severe case.
Severe acne is indicated by harsh skin damage or scarring and deep cysts. It is divided into four types, namely: Acne Conglobata, which is defined by inflammation, scarring and conspicuous and widespread open comedones (or blackheads) commonly on the face, neck, upper/lower arms and even buttocks; Acne Fulminans which is the start of high-risk inflammation and usually distinguished by fever accompanied by aching of joints, especially of the hips and knees; Gram-negative folliculitis which is caused by bacterial reaction that leads to inflammation of follicles; and Nodulocystic Acne or the uncommon type which is characterized by cysts that grows singly or widespread in several centimeters.
Having these or any of these acne types indeed have a great impact on anyone’s life. They are oftentimes considered as the leading causes of embarrassment and lack of self-esteem as they limit one’s opportunities in socializing and even in employment. The good thing is that this age and time is equipped with modern knowledge and facilities that offer severe acne treatment.
Severe and stubborn acne may need an equally aggressive treatment done by dermatologists. Some of treatments and medications recommended by skin specialists are as follows:
Isotretinoin. Isotretinion is a powerful medication that treats severe acne that has been resistant to other acne drugs. They come in the form of pills and could be taken one or twice a day for a period of time.
Oral antibiotics. This is considered one of the most proven forms of severe acne treatment especially in reducing its inflammation. They usually come in high dosages at the onset of medication but are reduced as the acne inflammation decreases as well.
Drainage and Surgical Excision. It is also called, “acne surgery” performed on obstinate and large cysts that cannot be treated through medication. The procedure is synonymous to squeezing and picking but has to be done not by patients but by dermatologists; otherwise, they lead to acne infection and scarring thereby worsening the condition.
Interlesional Corticosteroid Injection. A treatment done through injection of a strongly- diluted corticosteroid on the acne cyst. Such injection is said to melt the cysts in three to five days.
So if you had been sulking in embarrassment and desperation because of acne, there are indeed sure ways to beat them. You just need to consult skin experts and devote an amount of time for the treatments.
